In spite of being abandoned by her father, Fable couldn’t stop herself from wanting to find him again. She found her way off of the island he had left her on and planned to buy passage across The Narrows to prove herself.
But her father might have been right when he told her she was not made for this world. Danger looms at every corner and trying to reclaim the small sliver of family she has left might kill her.
I really wanted to like this book especially since everyone else seemed to swear by it, but I have had this happen before, *cough Caraval cough*. It was beautifully written, but lacked something and I can’t really put my finger on it. I feel like the romance didn’t really work and kind of came out of nowhere, it was sweet but happened way too late and progressed way too quickly. There wasn’t any real hints that there had been a romance blossoming in the first half of the book.
The pacing felt off to me, there wasn’t a lot of set up for the final conflict so I literally feel like I was dropped off into the ocean. I really think if I hadn’t read and adored The Daughter of the Pirate King then I would have appreciated this book more. I just feel like the stakes weren’t really that high. There is a reveal in the middle of the book which kind of steals the tension that happened in the first 25% and you’re kind of sitting there like. Okay, so she wasn’t in danger?
I’m not sure I am invested enough to continue on with the story, but I will think about it.
