These books are so short it’s really hard to talk about or review without spoiling main plot points so please read on at your own risk.
I got the idea to start this series because it is so beloved by a generation and the same goes with the movies which I do honestly enjoy. There’s a lot that is different and it feels like the first three books are squeezed into the first movie with some liberties, it might include the fourth book as well but I haven’t read it so I can’t really comment.
The books are fast and in a diary format which make them even faster reads than other contemporaries that I have read. Not too bad right? Well, I think I’m just too old to read these books. I’ve gotten to the point at least with this series that I can’t relate.
Mia suddenly has a boyfriend at the beginning of this book. It’s Kenny who had been her secret admirer and within the first chapter or two we find out that she’s excited and stressed because she doesn’t like him. So the entire book is her wanting to break up with Kenny and she hatches this plan to be Michael’s secret admirer. Michael at this point is also with someone and it’s even mentioned by Mia’s grandmother that she should start looking for a new boyfriend before she breaks up with Kenny.
Poor Kenny. I couldn’t get over it. I get the series is about a girl who is a fairly clueless high school student, but still. The whole mess left a bad impression and it felt more like middle school antics than high school.
No amount of Buffy references could save this one for me. I’m really waiting for Mia to grow up a little more. If someone has read the entire series and this actually happens. Let me know because I don’t think I’m going to be continuing on.
