Have you ever fallen in love? You probably have or I hope you have, but I’m talking about that wild fiery love that burns you completely and as the embers cool you have a new concept of home.
That’s me and The Raven Cycle. It’s one of those series that I feel came into my life at the most perfect time. I lost my Grandmother and just broken up with a man that I honestly could have seen myself marrying in the future so we’re going to say that the bottom really fell out of my life and I was in a freefall. I couldn’t even feel the walls at this point and it was just me plummeting hundreds of feet into darkness.
Then my cousin posted a twitter poll asking what she should read next and on that poll was The Raven Boys. Now, at this point this book has been on my TBR for over a year, almost to the day, and I had a nice used copy, a first edition, from Thriftbooks on my shelf. I suggested the series and she suggested a buddy read. I started that night and fell in love. Wild fiery love.
The series follows Blue Sargent who has been told at a young age that when she kisses her true love, he will die. There aren’t a lot of specifics of how or why this happens, but it’s shaped her idea of love and left her to kind of care for people at a distance. At the first of the book she is told that this is the year that she will fall in love and everything starts.
It wasn’t just the spooky tone of the book, the serious and almost morbid nature that caught me off guard, but it was this feeling of finding my home. I tell everyone that this book series is my soul laid bare because it really is. This book series is quirky, dark and sometimes pretentious as fuck, but it’s still everything to me.
Reading the series isn’t just self care, it’s been able to resurrect my spirit and bring me back from some of the darkest times in my life. It’s given me hope and love and made me feel like there is a place that I can always go back to. Henrietta, Virginia is that place. I am homesick for it. I long to be there and see these characters.
In short. The Raven Cycle is home to me. I finished my third readthrough earlier this week and it has come at a time where I was feeling low again. It’s fixed me. I want nothing more than for others to find their home within the pages of a book. To find somewhere they can go and feel seen and known and adored. I know a lot of people see that in the Harry Potter series and that’s wonderful. Hold onto that.
Anyway, it’s been a while since I posted since I’m working on a few things in my life and trying to start streaming video games on twitch. Nope. I won’t plug it here. I just thought I needed to write a big appreciation post for The Raven Cycle and hopefully inspire someone to pick up the series. It’s my life’s mission in a way.
Is there a series that you adore beyond all? Let me know in the comments. I might check it out.
