After the haunting beauty of This Savage Song and the way it wrapped up, I didn’t know where Our Dark Duet was going to go. This wasn’t anything like what I had expected, but I should have known since it is Victoria Schwab.
I really enjoyed the overall tone of the book and the way that the different personalities and I guess moralities of the characters played against each other. Lines blurred more than the first book and you’re left questioning, yes there is still a clear good side and bad side, but the clean white of the heroes is tinged grey which adds to the metaphor, the theme of the overall book.
There isn’t a lot to say without going into spoiler territory so I’m going to try and dance along the edges a little bit.
It did something that I loved, the whole rag-tag of monster hunter trope that gave me satisfying paranormal fantasy vibes. I really love when there’s just a group of people thrown together against one common enemy. That and the ending. It was perfect. Victoria Schwab doesn’t shy away from inflicting pain, good pain, bittersweet pain. It had to end this way and it was beautiful.
