Becca loves reading romance novels, mostly because since her parent’s divorce she knows that love is messy and never ends the way you hope. Then in a moment of desperation after being teased for not having a boyfriend, Becca responds that she actually does and the hottest guy in school surprises her by backing up her lie. How long can they keep up this fake dating scheme before things start feeling real?
I was surprised that this was a Wattpad novel because my experience with Wattpad is usually all over the place. That said, even though the plot is paper thin, it’s a cute book. It does at times feel very shallow and formulaic but the end is fairly hopeful without being too intense for the age range. (There aren’t any grand soulmate declarations).
So, are there any cons? Not too many. It’s pretty safe other than the mean girl trope that puts Becca into the fake dating situation in the first place, but that also kind of putters out later on in the narrative. There are a few characters, namely the parents who don’t really act like a parents and Becca’s mom is pushing her to find a boyfriend which feels like something that would happen in other generations.
All in all it’s a light read that gives you a mood boost.
