The Final Empire follows Kelsier, a mistborn and a survivor who is building a rebellion to overthrow the Lord Ruler and Vin, a 16-year-old girl who is part of a Skaa thieving crew in the city of Luthadel. Their paths cross and Kelsier soon realizes the young thief, Vin has powers similar to his. He takes her under his wing and teaches her against the backdrop of an oppressive leadership and whispers of rebellion.
Truthfully I have two Brandon Sanderson books on my shelf, The Way of Kings and Words of Radiance, those are two chunky books. I had seen a few reviews of people saying if you wanted to get into the Cosmere universe (which includes the Stormlight Archive and Mistborn among other series of his), the easiest entry would be Mistborn or Warbreaker. I chose The Final Empire, the first Mistborn book.
This is my first foray into high fantasy, like true plot-heavy fantasy with all these intricate subplots, so I decided to listen to this on audiobook to save myself the headache of struggling with names and locations. I’m glad that I did because I don’t think I would have continued with the story otherwise. It was pretty slow to start, I couldn’t really see what we were building to or why some of the parts were necessary, but it all worked. It came together and surprised me.
Knowing what I knew about Brandon Sanderson after watching his series of writing classes available on youtube, check them out if you’re ever interested, I didn’t really expect there to be such a sweet romance at the center of the plot. It was subtle, but meaningful and sweet. I really enjoyed it.
I also really enjoyed his magic system, he didn’t let anything slip through the cracks here. Everything was explained and had it’s use and vulnerability. This is how a magic system should be.
I’m seriously shocked. I’m more of a character driven type of gal and this had everything and it was perfect. Intricate plot and well developed characters that make you laugh or cry. I’m going to be continuing on with the series, hopefully reading the next two books sometime this year.
